5 Foolproof Makeup Tips for Beginners

1. Prime Time

Before you put any makeup on your face be sure to use a primer. My all time favorite primer has to be the Becca Cosmetics Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector! ($36) The primer is a little on the pricier side, but a little goes a long way. A cheaper alternative to this primer would be NO7 Beautifully Matte Make Up Base.($12)

2. Eyes first

Applying your eyeshadow and eyeliner first allows you to make mistakes without having to completely start over on your makeup! Think about it, lets say you’ve applied your foundation, contour, and under eye highlight, then you go to apply a shimmer shadow or one that contains excess fallout, more than likely the product lands on your face and sets into your foundation. Sometimes you can dust it off and sometimes you can’t, causing you to have to start over. Applying your eye makeup first avoids the risk of having to start over.

3. Hydrated Lips

Ensuring your lips have adequate moisture before applying any kind of lip product is key to flawless application. I used to avoid putting on chapstick before applying my matte lipsticks because I wanted my lips to have a true matte look. Boy was I wrong, within a few hours of applying a matte lipstick the product would start to crack. Applying chapstick or a lip moisturizer before lipstick application helps to keep matte lipsticks from drying out our lips. Don’t worry your lipstick will remain matte and it will last longer!

4. Liner is your best friend

I always thought lip liner was a waste of time and money, but it has allowed me to use ANY color lipstick I want. You’re probably thinking in your head why would liner allow such a thing. My skin tone is very dark complected, and putting on lighter pink and nude lipsticks or glosses always left my makeup looking clownish. Pairing a darker liner with lighter lipstick colors allows for more range in colors because it adds that needed definition to your lips.

5. Set ,Set, Set

This is probably my favorite part of makeup application! I don’t know why I feel so fabulous when spritzing a mist onto my face. Setting your makeup after application is essential to keeping your makeup on longer, and holding your foundation in place. My favorite setting spray at the moment is Urban Decay All Nighter ($32), a cheaper alternative would be NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray ($8).
